DECD: What was your very first job?
Ola:
I joined Arthur Andersen (now Accenture) as a consultant in Lagos Nigeria. I loved being a consultant – every project was fresh and there was always something new to learn. I guess inquisitiveness is part of my DNA – I always want to understand why
DECD: What inspired you to become a coach?
Ola:
I initially explored becoming a nutritionist! It was while I was completing my training I realised what I really wanted to understand was why so many of us could not follow through on promises we made to ourselves. So I looked into coaching and was hooked.
DECD: As a coach what led you to specialise in the particular area that you concentrate on
Ola:
I work with founders & senior leaders. This was a very natural transition as my career had focused on consulting in a variety of settings – form founder led start-ups to large multinational organisations. My coaching qualifications have provided my with an additional lens with which to support leaders whilst navigating changes required to achieve objectives.
DECD: What is the most interesting part of your work?
Ola:
I love the variety and the “aha” moments clients get when they see what has been blocking their thinking thus far
DECD: What is the one project/case that you’re most proud of in your career and why?
Ola:
I worked with a co-founder who was having real difficulties communicating with the other co-founder. This was putting their organisation at risk. Our work together helped her find new ways to work with people and situations that did not meet her expectations. Her relationship with her co-founder improved enormously as did company performance.
DECD: What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion in the workplace in today’s society?
Ola:
I believe people are becoming more inclusive and accepting of differences in the UK workplace. I also believe that as a minority, the lens / mindset through which I view actions of others can either vest me with freedom or victimhood – it is my choice.
DECD: What about your heritage makes you feel proud?
Ola:
I really appreciate the opportunity I’ve had to see how different societies operate by dint of having lived in different settings. I’m proud of the drive and ambition my background has created in me. I’m glad to be different.
DECD: What do you do outside of work?
Ola:
I love to “read” – in quotes because these days it’s usually audio books! Also I love freestyle step – been doing it for over 30 years and will probably be stepping till I draw my last breath
DECD: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read this week?
Ola:
I read Shoe Dog not too long ago – a great story but also so much to learn for leaders and founders.
DECD: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Ola:
Nothing lasts forever!
DECD: What is your favourite movie, book, song, album or quote?
Ola:
Just Fine – Mary J Blige
